OUR MISSION

The Accademia Musicale Chigiana’s Department of Sound and Image is thrilled to announce the second edition of its International Film Scoring Competition, dedicated to advancing the art of film and media music.

This competition aims to discover and celebrate fresh voices in contemporary film scoring, offering emerging talents the chance to gain recognition and launch their professional careers.

We invite composers from around the world to showcase their creativity by submitting an original composition set to a specific scene chosen by our distinguished jury.

Compositions should feature orchestral scoring and, if desired, hybrid instrumentation. The orchestral arrangement includes:

Strings: 7 first violins, 6 second violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos, 2 double basses
Woodwinds: 2 flutes (optional piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (optional bass clarinet), 2 bassoons (optional contrabassoon)
Brass: 2 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones
Percussion: various instruments including timpani
Others: piano, harp

The grand prize offers an exceptional opportunity: the winner will attend the 3-week Chigiana Film Scoring Intensive Program in May 2025, culminating in the recording of their winning composition with the Orchestra della Toscana (ORT) in Florence, under the mentorship of one of our esteemed faculty members.

THE FILM CLIP – PROMPT

A man without gravity (2019)

The clip selected by the jury for the competition rescore is from the movie “A Man Without Gravity” (orig. L’uomo senza gravità, 2019).

Oscar is born on a stormy night, in the hospital of a small town and immediately we understand that there is something extraordinary in him : Does not obey the law of gravity. He floats in the air, hovers in the lightest room of a balloon, in front of the incredulous look of the mother and grandmother.

The two women run away with the baby and decide to keep it hidden from the eyes of the world for many, many years. Only Oscar’s friend Agata knows his secret. Many years later Oscar and Agata reconnect.  They rekindle their deep friendship.  And maybe more???

PLEASE NOTE:
In the clip music comes in at approximately at :48 seconds after Agata says, “Oscar…”  Play through to the end of the picture and feel free to ring out in the black.
